The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is being made mandatory by the EU to ensure that sustainability and material data for products can be traced. GS1 provides the global foundation for this: through open, globally unique standards (such as the QR code with GS1 Digital Link), GS1 securely links the physical product to its digital data.
The EU Ecodesign Regulation forms the basis for the mandatory introduction of the Digital Product Passport, which is expected to take effect in mid-2027.
From 18 February 2027, the Digital Battery Passport will be mandatory under the EU Battery Regulation.
From February 2027, batteries must carry a QR Code in accordance with the EU Battery Regulation. This applies to all categories of batteries sold or used within the EU.
