| EU Registry |
The central EU Digital Product Passport registry, operated by the European Commission. It does not host passport content itself - it stores each product's unique identifier, a pointer to where its passport is hosted, and associated metadata, so authorities and market actors can locate and verify each passport. Status as of August 2026: the Registry, its testing environment, and User Guidelines went live on 20 July 2026 with its operating rules set out in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778. | Harmonised Standards |
The eight horizontal European Standards developed by CEN/CENELEC JTC 24 provide the technical foundation for the Digital Product Passport, covering unique identifiers (EN 18219), data carriers (EN 18220), data exchange protocols (EN 18216), lifecycle/search APIs (EN 18222), system interoperability (EN 18223), data storage and persistence (EN 18221), access rights and IT security (EN 18239), and data authentication and integrity (EN 18246). As of August 2026, six standards (EN 18216, 18219, 18220, 18221, 18222 and 18223) have been cited as harmonized standards in the EU Official Journal through Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1736. Compliance with these standards provides a presumption of conformity with the corresponding ESPR requirements covered by the standards. EN 18239 and EN 18246 have completed formal approval but have yet to be cited in the Official Journal and therefore do not yet provide such a presumption of conformity. | Link Type |
A standardized parameter defined in the GS1 Web Vocabulary specifying the purpose or category of a resource linked from a GS1 Digital Link URI - for example a product information page, a Digital Product Passport, an instruction manual, a safety data sheet, or a declaration of conformity. The web service that processes a GS1 Digital Link URI at the point of scanning: it interprets the embedded identifier (e.g. GTIN) and, based on the requested or negotiated link type, redirects the user to the corresponding resource - such as the product's Digital Product Passport, marketing page, or compliance documentation. Note that older or less sophisticated scanning apps may not process the link type parameter - they may simply resolve the GS1 Digital Link like a plain URL and open whatever page the resolver returns by default, without offering the user a choice between the different linked resources. |
| Transtition QR Codes |
A dual-marking approach used during the migration period leading up to and following Sunrise 2027, in which a GS1 Digital Link QR Code is printed alongside the existing linear barcode (e.g. EAN/UPC) on the same product or packaging. This ensures the item remains scannable at points of sale still running on 1D-only scanning equipment, while retailers and systems already upgraded to 2D can access the additional data and functionality carried by the QR Code. |
