How does QR Code tracking work?

How does QR code tracking work?

When you create a dynamic QR Code, every user who scans your QR Code is first redirected to our server. There, we analyze the user's device and location before redirecting them to the target URL. You also receive statistics on the number of people who have scanned your QR Codes.

Status Monitor

Tracking users and devices

QR Code Analytics

Measure your unique visitors

For each QR Code, we track the following information:

  • Unique visitors
  • Scan quantity
  • Average scan rate per day
  • Date of the first and last scan

Capture mobile devices

Each scan saves the calling device with

  • Fire e.g. Apple
  • Model e.g. iPhone
  • Browser e.g. Safari
  • Operating system e.g. iOS

It is not technically possible to save the telephone number or other personal data such as name or address data. You need lead landing pages for this.

Protection from bots

We protect your QR Codes from being scanned by bots. We filter out IP addresses that come from hosting companies and not from real people. IP address data is provided by IPinfo and updated once a week.

Track in local time

The date and, depending on the time zone, the local time are saved for each scan. If you use the same QR Code in different countries, you will always see the local scan time.

Evaluate locale and language

When a QR Code is scanned, the mobile browser sends its preferred language and locale. You can use this information to recognize tourists from abroad, for example:

When a tourist scans a QR Code in your hotel, the country determined via the IP address is your home country. However, we also evaluate the locale and therefore you can see the country of origin and the preferred language of your guests.

Position accuracy

Precise GPS tracking

Location Tracking

qr1°at determines the position for each scan as accurately as possible and saves the country, city and optional GPS coordinates. When recording with GPS, the user must explicitly agree to their position data being transmitted.

  • Longitude
  • Latitude
  • Accuracy

Scan location information is available in all reports via the dashboard, CSV download and API.

Geocoding of scans

Activate geocoding to read the following data points from GPS coordinates

  • Region
  • City
  • Zip code
  • Street and house number

QR Code Map

As soon as the QR Codes that you have linked to the saved address are scanned, they immediately appear on the map with the number of scans.

This allows you to determine your most-visited locations and optimize your marketing activities accordingly.

Social Performance

Social media tracking

Share social buttons

If you create landing pages for your QR Codes and they are shared on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter or WhatsApp, you can see in your statistics how many visits you receive from different channels.

  • Inquiries
  • Clicks on the share button
  • Referrers

This helps you learn where your target audience is most active so you can plan your ad campaigns for each channel accordingly.

Track WeChat campaigns

QR Codes that are scanned from the WeChat app also appear with a WeChat icon in the statistics next to the smartphone. This means you not only know from which device, but also from which app the QR Code was accessed.

Our service offers an optional consent popup that is displayed to the user before third-party cookies are stored for GDPR and CCPA compliant tracking.

FAQ

The number of requests indicates how many times the short ULR of a QR Code has been requested. A QR Code may be scanned 1 or more times by the same person. Therefore, the number of requests is always greater than or equal to the number of unique visitors.

What personal data do you collect during QR Code Tracking and is this GDPR compliant?

The good news is that the tracking process itself does not store any personal data. When requesting a tracking URL or scanning a dynamic QR code you do not have to worry about GDPR or CCPA. We just store: user agent, local time of the request, anonymized IP and, if possible, country and city. No third-party server or API is used.
