Background & Legal Obligation

The EU Battery Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542) places clear obligations on manufacturers, importers, authorized representatives, and distributors. Starting in February 2027, all batteries on the European market must be labeled with an ISO/IEC-compliant QR Code. If the required data (including the approximately 80 attributes for EV batteries specified in Annex XIII) is not provided on time, you face drastic fines of up to €100,000 in Germany or up to €200,000 in France, as well as exclusion from public tenders. Don’t wait until the last second of your implementation project.

Who needs which level of coverage?

Full Digital Battery Passport:Mandatory for LV batteries (light vehicles such as e-bikes), industrial batteries with a capacity of more than 2 kWh, and electric vehicle (EV) batteries placed on the market in the EU.

Basic Digital Information: Mandatory for all other battery types (e.g., portable batteries). Information regarding the manufacturer, weight, capacity, chemical composition, hazardous substances, declarations of conformity, and instructions for disposal and firefighting must be digitally accessible via the QR Code.

When will the Digital Battery Passport become mandatory?

The deadline is February 18, 2027. By that date, the affected battery types must be equipped with a valid battery passport and a physically affixed QR Code.

Is our company data secure in DPP Manager?

What role do the 'Harmonized Standards' play?

Since the EU regulation only specifies general framework conditions, the European standardization organizations (CEN/CENELEC/JTC24) define the exact technical infrastructure in nine specific areas (e.g., APIs, data storage, and IT security).
