Use cases

8 ways to use a text QR Code

Plain text is stored directly inside the code, so it can be read without a website or an internet connection.

Product labels & packaging

Print ingredients, care instructions or batch details that customers can read on their phone, even where there is no mobile signal.

Inventory & asset tags

Encode serial numbers, storage locations or maintenance notes so staff can identify equipment with a quick scan.

Museums & exhibitions

Add short descriptions, dates or translations next to exhibits without crowding the display.

Scavenger hunts & escape games

Hide clues, riddles and next-step instructions that players only see once they find and scan the code.

Classroom activities

Share questions, answers, vocabulary or instructions that students can check at their own pace.

Equipment instructions

Stick operating steps, safety reminders or setup notes directly on machines, tools and devices.

Gifts & greeting cards

Hide a personal message, a poem or a surprise announcement for the recipient to discover.

Promo & voucher codes

Reveal a discount code on posters, receipts or packaging so customers can copy it at checkout.

Character limits

How much text fits in a QR Code?

Capacity depends on the type of characters you use and on the error correction level.

QR Code capacity at a glance

The largest QR Code (version 40) has 177 × 177 modules. At the lowest error correction level (L) it can store up to:

Character type Max. characters
Numbers only (0–9) 7,089
Alphanumeric (A–Z uppercase, 0–9, space and $ % * + - . / :) 4,296
Bytes (any text, e.g. UTF-8) 2,953
Kanji 1,817
Comparison of a QR Code with short text and a dense QR Code with long text
  • Lowercase letters, most punctuation and line breaks use byte mode, so everyday text follows the 2,953-byte limit.
  • Accented letters such as é or ü take 2 bytes each and emojis take 4 bytes, so they reduce how many characters fit.
  • Higher error correction makes a code more robust but lowers its capacity: at level H, byte mode holds up to 1,273 bytes.
  • The longer the text, the denser the code. For reliable scanning in print, keep your message short and the code large enough.
Dynamic QR Codes

4 reasons to use a dynamic QR Code instead

A text QR Code is static: once printed, its content can't change. A dynamic QR Code stores a short link that you control.

Edit after printing

Update your message, fix a typo or replace the content at any time without reprinting the QR Code.

Track your scans

Get scan analytics to see how often and when your QR Code is scanned.

Smaller, easier-to-scan codes

The code only stores a short link, so it stays simple and scannable no matter how long your content is.

Richer content

Go beyond plain text with a mobile landing page that can include images, videos and call-2-action buttons.
